We are pleased to announce that the speaker at our September meeting will be Sunny Jane Morton. Sunny is an internationally-known genealogy educator and award-winning writer and editor. Her lectures are packed with try-this-now strategies and resources and delivered with humor and plenty of motivating examples and stories. Sunny has written two books: How to Find Your Family History in U.S. Church Records, with Harold Henderson, CG, and Story of My Life: A Workbook for Preserving Your Legacy.

Sunny will present Collateral Kin: Indirect Routes to Direct Ancestors: The most direct route to information about direct ancestors may be through other relatives and in-laws. Three concise case studies demonstrate the value of researching these “collateral kin.” See how collateral research helped prove an ancestor’s parents, solve a migration mystery and fill gaps in an ancestor’s biography.

We’re ba-ack!

Join us at our regular meeting time on Thursday, May 28 at 10:00am for our May meeting. The library is still closed and large gatherings are still not safe, but we are adjusting—We will meet virtually using Zoom. We are calling it a Zoom Get-together. Our agenda for the meeting is simple. We will just get together, chat, and learn to use the software together. We will return to our regularly scheduled programming in June.

March 2020 Lake County Genealogical Society Meeting Cancellation Announcement

The Lake County Genealogical Society (LCGS) meetings will be canceled until further notice due to the Convid 19 virus. Our meetings are typically held on the last Thursday of the month from 10:00 am to noon in the basement of the Morley Library (184 Phelps St., Painesville). Please keep checking our web site (www.lcgsohio.org) for information on when we will start meeting again.

Our scheduled speaker for the March meeting, Chris Staats, has been rescheduled to speak at our November meeting.

Please join us as we share information on where and how to conduct genealogical research from society members and local genealogy experts.

On Thursday, March 26, 2020, at 10:00 am, the Lake County Genealogical Society (LCGS) will have our monthly meeting. Our speaker will be Chris Staats who will tell us about “Analysis and Correlation: Two Keys to Sound Conclusions.” Careful analysis of individual records may reveal more evidence than we might think. Careful correlation combines all the evidence to solve difficult research problems.

Chris Staats is a Cleveland, Ohio-based professional genealogical researcher, presenter, and writer. He has written articles for Family Tree Magazine, Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly, and other publications. Chris has given presentations covering methodology, resources, technology, and other topics at genealogical societies and libraries across Ohio. He is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and Seminar Chairperson for the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Genealogical Committee.

On Thursday, February 27, J. Mark Lowe will present “Timelines and Filling in the Gaps” via live feed.

J. Mark Lowe, CG, is a a full-time professional genealogist, author, and teacher who researches primarily in original records and manuscripts throughout the South. J. Mark Lowe has been researching families for more than 55 years. He grew up in Tennessee with extensive family roots in Kentucky. He has traveled extensively in both states and enjoys sharing his love of genealogy and the joy of research with others including some historic reenacting.

As a researcher and lecturer, Lowe enjoys working with genealogical groups and professional organizations. In the process of teaching others, Mark builds his own skills and insight for research. His experience as a classroom teacher, principal and professional researcher provides a different perspective for each research problem. As a national and regional speaker, he has brought these areas of expertise along with his unique humor and southern style to many diverse audiences. Mark is also an instructor at IGHR (Institute for Genealogical & Historical Research (Samford Univ.) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (UGA).

On November 21 at 10:00 am, our guest speaker, Liz Pearson will present “English and Welsh Research”. Liz Pearson is a native of England whose foray into genealogical research started about 35 years ago when an attempt to identify her grandmother turned into her very own family history addiction. Since then, she has spent thousands of hours combing the myriad English and Welsh archives in the UK, the US, and online for herself and others.
