A.K.A. Williams Cemetery, Marble Cemetery

West Kirtland Cemetery is a small wooded cemetery on the south side of Chardon Road (US 6) about one-half mile west of Hobart Road, which was across from the Friends Church . It is a City of Kirtland cemetery, however there have been no burials there (according to death dates on the stones) since Altha Willis died in 1953. The earliest death date on a legible stone is August 12, 1825, that of Emily, third daughter of Abel and Amanda Nash. Considering the number of illegible brownstones, there is a good chance that this was not the first burial here.

This burial ground has had several names over the years. Often people call it by the name of their own family, or one they know in it. Most often it is referred to as “Williams” but it is in the old Pleasant Valley area, and Davis Funeral home recorded Jerome Edick’s 1919 burial in “Pleasant Valley Cemetery.” It has been known as the Marble Cemetery, especially to the Marble family, and the land appears on 1820, 1830, 1840 landowner maps as Marble property. The Alexander Williams property seems to be more to the west, but by 1857 the two properties were adjacent, the neighbor between apparently having sold his land to Williams. In 1874, the map shows the cemetery on the border between Daniel Marble’s land an

d G.H. Kent’s to the east near the center of lot 88. The Williams family has a large lot with a stone retaining wall which may have been very impressive at the time.

The cemetery is set off by a split rail fence and is quite visible from the road. It appears as an old cemetery, but has many newer granite stones in it. There seem to be empty areas, or those with several little heaps of stone, the deteriorated old brownstones.

It appears to have two sections, one on the west, dubbed Section 1, and one on the east, Section 2. Both section’s rows were read from west to east and the stones from north to south. .

This cemetery’s readings were proofed on July 25, 2000.

Note: Duplicate stone numbers indicate multiple persons inscribed on the same stone as detailed in the inscription column.
