The land at the corner of Lane Road and South Ridge Road was donated for the South Church and Cemetery by Mr. H. J. Wright’s grandfather. Around 1919 the church was moved off the cemetery property to the land diagonal from it, being the southwestern corner of River Road and South Ridge Road. This piece of land was then known as Keener’s Falls. The church is now the home of the Anzelc family. When the foundation and basement for the new location of the church was being dug, an Indian graveyard was discovered. The remains of nine Indians were found along with flint spear heads, tomahawk heads of stone, flint arrow heads and skin scrapers. Testing in the 1990s for the Vrooman Road bridge relocation project has indicated more remains in the area of the South Ridge/Lane/River Road intersection.
The inscription list which was done about 1929 shows the earliest burial in Lane & South Ridge Cemetery was Anna Cone, who died in October, 1829. There are a number of stones in the 1830’s in this cemetery.
The 1940 WPA map states that the land was owned by Nathan Wright. The one acre cemetery was deeded to Trustees in 1939. Stephen Norwood, soldier of the Revolution rests here.
This cemetery is actually laid out with Section A on the south side and Section B on the north side. However, because the drive runs through the center, dividing the two sections in half, and the division between the sections was not obvious, the sections were read as one on each side of the drive.
Addendum June 2017: The township has also uploaded a searchable burial index at http://perrytownship-lake.com/cemetery/ with most of the data transcribed from the cemetery records.
Note: Duplicate stone numbers indicate multiple persons inscribed on the same stone as detailed in the inscription column.
