Willoughby
(inactive)
In the past Lake Shore Boulevard in the northern part of the city was called Plains Road. The first person buried was 1 year old Jane O. Gray, who died on December 21, 1847. This was derived from the inscriptions. She was daughter of Martin and Marietta Gray, although the stone legibility was poor even in the 1920s.
Deed Volume F, page 354 dated 25 July 1848 shows Jeremiah Campbell selling this cemetery to Willoughby Plains Cemetery Trustees for $20.00. The parcel contained ½ acre of land for use as a burial ground.
In an article “Willoughby’s Beautiful Cemetery” in about 1967, it states that this cemetery was “inherited” by the City of Willoughby when the Lake Front was annexed.
The most recent death date on a stone is May 7, 1968, that of Robert J. Deike.
Note: Duplicate stone numbers indicate multiple persons inscribed on the same stone as detailed in the inscription column.
